The ultimate battle between Samsung and Canon ! @ 10:18 AM

My baby has officially ORDed. (not quite sure if it is grammatically correct to put "-ed" behind "ORD" ~~)

We went to celebrate and marked his freedom by having his (and my) hair colored~~

I also just bought a new camera, Samsung i8 in pink

The actual color of the camera is more of hot pink than this baby pink. And it looks much more toy-like in reality.

I debated myself between Samsung i8 and Canon IXUS 80IS. Till the point of sales lady was also sian and asked me to go home, think about it and come back the next day. Baby, being always the wiser one, said that if I do that I will just face the same problem when I come back. Lolx.

So quite a number of factors resulted in my indecisiveness.

1. Price

Canon = S$385 come with 4GB memory card, screen protector and cleaning kit --> pretty good deal for the camera compared to other shops in Funan. (yes I shopped for my camera at Funan if you would like to know)

Samsung = S$315 come with 2GB memory card, screen protector and tripod --> the sales lady gave me this "special price" after seeing my hesitation and her continuous punching on the calculator.

So Samsung wins for its being more economic. However if I was determined to buy the Canon I would not regret for its price as it was pretty a good deal for this brand.

2. Look

Canon: definitely look more expensive to me (and indeed it is). The pink shade was not too striking compared to Samsung hot pink. Exudes a sense of feminine and class as well.

Samsung: well like I said, toy-like and hot pink. The casing was more of plastic rather than metal.

Canon wins somehow. Cuz I was hankering after its rich look materialistic as I am.

3. Functions

Canon: a good camera take good picture. Full stop.

Samsung: a (good) camera cum MP3 player and text viewer and PMP (dun ask me what's that). That explains its name: Portable Multimedia camera.

Samsung wins some extra points for its various functions.

But then again Canon being a straightforward camera does what it does best, taking picture. Whereas Samsung is trying to pack itself with more things to find its niche as being a pretty new player in the camera market. Would these extras compromise the priority task of a camera, that is taking picture, or serve as enhancement to the traditional digital camera?

Ehem, anyway for me I was thinking this way, I paid $315 to buy a camera which takes decent picture + a MP3 (which I not necessary use all the time as I have my Sony Erricson phone to serve as my MP3 and radio) + don't-know-what-other-things from Samsung. And I paid $385 for a digital camera from Canon. So regardless of the photo quality (which somehow Canon gave me the impression that it is better), Samsung wins for its being cheaper and yet more functionable.

If you are looking for a good digital camera, Canon is the choice. But if you are more open-minded and willing to try new stuff, Samsung might be just for you.


Anyway, now I have a toy-lookalike camera which can serve as a MP3 as well.

This self-debating process got me thinking about myself. Superficial seems to be an obvious trait in me. Why on earth that when someone shops for her digital camera, pink is one of the criteria that the ideal camera must possess ???

So yeah, now I have a pink handphone, a pink camera, a pink Nitendo DS lite. Seems like the only gadget hasn't got itself in pink color is my laptop. AND so it shall be! Till I got my hand on a new lappie!!!
